The Government of Canada's August 11th. announcement regarding new rules pertaining to the access of marijuana products for medical purposes is reckless as it failed to reiterate the serious risks associated with the use of this "experimental drug". Instead of issuing warnings the Government
selected to make the following erroneous statement:
"Individuals authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes by a health care practitioner will continue to have the option of purchasing safe, quality-controlled cannabis from one of the 34 producers licensed by Health Canada. "
Marijuana is not safe for human consumption, a fact of a mountain of evidence based science and a fact that has been acknowledged by the Health Canada. A government of Canada leaflet produced by Health Canada and updated in December 2015: Consumer Information – Cannabis (Marihuana, marijuana) reads:
“The use of this product involves risks to health, some of which may not be known or fully understood. Studies supporting the safety and efficacy of cannabis for therapeutic purposes are limited and do not meet the standard required by the Food and Drug Regulations for marketed drugs in Canada."
The government's statement is completely in opposition to the US Drug Enforcement Agency's decision made the on the same date to maintain marijuana as a CS I substance - which is defined as a drug or substance that has a high potential for abuse, has NO currently accepted medical use in treatment in the US and there is lack of accepted safety for use of the drug under medical supervision."
